Zicam Cold Remedy Ingredients: Zinc Gluconate & Loss of Smell

The active ingredient in Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs is Zincum Gluconicum 2x (two parts per hundred). Inactive ingredients in Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel include benzalkonium chloride, glycerin, hydroxyethylcellulose, purified water, sodium chloride, and sodium hydroxide. Zicam is considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be a homeopathic remedy, and thus is not subject to rigorous and regulated safety and efficacy testing.

The FDA warned consumers in 2009 that the soluble zinc ingredients in Zicam intranasal products could lead the permanent loss of sense of smell. Zinc gluconate has long been known to damage or destroy olfactory nerves in the nose that give you the ability to detect odor.  After receiving approximately 130 complaints about consumers suffering permanent or long-lasting anosmia (loss of sense of smell or ability to detect odor), the FDA warned consumers to stop using two popular Zicam intranasal gel products, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs.

Loss of the ability to detect odor is an unexpected side effect that Zicam does not warn consumers about. You may be entitled to compensation from Zicam’s maker, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., if you have suffered anosmia (complete loss of smell) or hyposmia (reduced loss of smell) from using Zicam.
