Zinc Intranasal Gel Side Effects: Zicam and AnosmiaZicam Cold Remedy nasal spray and swab products are considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as homeopathic products, and are considered to be harmless remedies with no adverse side effects. However, Zicam’s manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., and the FDA have both received hundreds of complaints from Zicam users and physicians about permanent loss of smell following use of Zicam. Anosmia, the inability to smell or detect odor, is a potential side effect of using Zicam, the FDA has determined. Some Zicam users also suffer hyposmia, the reduced or limited ability to detect odor. Zicam’s manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., denies that Zicam can cause anosmia or hyposmia. They have long maintained that the loss of the sense of smell that Zicam users complain of is merely a symptom of their cold or allergy. While intranasal swelling or inflammation of the nasal membranes may cause the temporary loss of smell, common colds and allergies by themselves do not cause permanent anosmia. The loss of sense of smell that Zicam users sometimes experience is linked to its active ingredient, soluble zinc gluconate (zincum gluconium). Although zinc may reduce the duration of a cold, its use in intranasal sprays and gels can also permanently damage or destroy olfactory nerves. For 10 years, Zicam’s product labeling has not warned product users of this potential side effect. The FDA is now requiring Zicam to warn users of this risk in the future. Under product liability law, if you have suffered complete or reduced ability to smell due to the use of Zicam, you may be able to obtain compensation in a lawsuit.
