Anosmia and Zicam: How Zicam Causes Loss of Smell

Some users of over-the-counter Zicam Cold Remedy products have experienced an unexpected and undesirable side effect: complete loss of sense of smell (anosmia) or reduced loss of smell (hyposmia). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received approximately 130 complaints of anosmia and hyposmia due to Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal gel products since they first came on the market in 1999. Zicam’s manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., has received at least 800 complaints from consumers.

Certain Zicam Cold remedy products cause permanent or long lasting loss of smell in some users because their main active ingredient is zinc gluconate. Since intranasal zinc products were first used to treat polio in the 1930’s, they have long been known to cause loss of smell in some users. Despite this information, Zicam’s maker has failed to warn consumers of they could potentially suffer anosmia or hyposmia from using Zicam. Until now, the FDA has not been involved, either. Because Zicam is considered a homeopathic remedy, the FDA does not rigorously test it for safety or effectiveness. Homeopathic medications are considered safe and are not supposed to cause adverse reactions.

The FDA’s warning to consumers to stop using Zicam intranasal gel products in June 2009 validates the claims of hundreds of consumers and physicians. Matrixx Initiatives, Zicam’s manufacturer, has already paid millions to hundreds of plaintiffs who have lost their sense of smell due after using Zicam intranasal gel cold remedy products.

If you have suffered a loss of smell due to Zicam Cold Remedy products, you have a legal right to compensation.
