Zicam Nasal Injury: Olfactory Nerve Damage

Use of certain Zicam intranasal cold remedy products can cause olfactory nerve damage that results in permanent or long lasting loss of sense of smell (anosmia). On June 16, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicly warned consumers to stop using and discard certain intranasal Zicam Cold Remedy products:  Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs.

Both Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs contain the ingredient zinc gluconate, which can cause anosmia nasal injury.  Many Zicam users do not immediately notice they have lost their sense of smell or taste because they are suffering a cold while using Zicam Cold Remedy products.

In 2004, Zicam redesigned the nasal pump used to administer the nasal gel after receiving complaints from hundreds of consumers that they experienced a terrible burning sensation from using Zicam intranasal cold remedy spray. The burning sensation was the active ingredient, zinc gluconate, damaging or destroying olfactory nerves. The resulting nasal injury was anosmia, complete loss of sense of smell or hyposmia, reduced loss of sense of smell. However, even with the new pump, some consumers still suffered loss of the ability to detect odors.
