If you are one of the hundreds or possibly thousands of Zicam Cold Remedy users who have lost their sense of smell from using Zicam, you may be entitled to monetary compensation from Zicam’s manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. If you have lost your sense of smell from using Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal products, contact Estey & Bomberger, a nationally recognized products liability litigation law firm to discuss your legal rights to monetary compensation.

In June 2009, the FDA issued a public advisory to consumers about the dangers of two Zicam products. The FDA urged consumers to immediately stop using Zicam, because it could cause permanent loss of smell. The zinc gel in Zicam is widely known to cause olfactory nerve damage, destroying the nerves in your nose needed to detect odors. Because olfactory nerves are used in taste, Zicam anosmia nasal injury can also affect your taste. However, Matrixx Initiatives has failed to warn consumers of this potentially adverse side effect. Zicam has been marketed since 1999 as a homeopathic cold remedy used to prevent and lessen the duration of the common cold with no adverse side effects.

We now know the FDA and Matrixx Initiatives  have both received complaints from Zicam users who have lost their sense of smell. The FDA received about 130 complaints, and Matrixx received about 800. Matrixx reportedly did not turn over the 800 reports  the FDA, because they didn’t believe a law passed in 2007 applied to them. The FDA did not learn of these 800 reports until a routine inspection in May. On June 16, 2009, after the FDA warned consumers to stop using two Zicam Cold Remedy products, Matrixx voluntarily withdrew the products from the market. Matrixx announced a formal recall of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs on June 24, 2009.

Matrixx has already paid millions of dollars to consumers who have suffered anosmia (complete loss of smell) due to intranasal Zicam Cold Remedy products. If you have suffered anosmia from using Zicam, you could be entitled to compensation as well.
