Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of the popular cold homeopathic cold remedy Zicam, confirmed issuing a formal voluntary recall of two Zicam Cold Remedy products on June 24, 2009. Matrixx said in a press release that the company was conducting the recall of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs because it desired to cooperate with the government health agency, but that it “vigorously disagrees” with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s allegation of smell loss associated with Zicam. The formal recall came a week after Matrixx announced it would voluntarily withdraw the two products from the market. That announcement was made on June 16, 2009, the same day the FDA warned consumers to stop using these products, along with a third product that was previously discontinued, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs Kids Size. Also on June 16, the FDA issued a warning letter to Matrixx Industries and said that the intranasal cold remedy products could “pose a serious risk to consumers who use them”, and called the Zicam products “misbranded.” Matrixx Industries has reportedly received more than 800 complaints of Zicam cold remedy product users suffering anosmia (complete loss of smell), and the FDA will review these complaints. A law passed in 2007 requires drug producers to forward complaints of product-related injuries to the FDA, however the FDA did not learn about these 800 complaints until May of 2009. Matrixx has long denied allegations that Zicam products cause users to lose their sense of smell. If you have suffered the loss of the ability to detect odor from using Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal gel products, you may be entitled to financial damages. The loss of the sense of smell (anosmia) is potentially very serious. People without the ability to detect odor may not be able to detect toxic odors, spoiled food, or smoke.
