Independent University Study Reveals Zicam Causes Loss of SmellIn 1999, Zicam Cold Remedy products came on the market as a popular "homeopathic" cold remedy. Since then, more than 1 billion dozes of Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal Cold Remedy products have been sold. Almost from the start, rumors began circulating that zinc, the active ingredient in Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal gel products, could actually cause temporary or permanent loss of smell, a condition known as anomsia. University of Washington Study On October 30, 2009, a group of researchers at the University of Washington, Seattle, published a study in which they found Zicam was cytotoxic (damaging to cells) in nasal tissue of both mice and humans. The university researchers initially set out to examine both short-term and long-term effects of several common intranasal agents, including saline, Afrin, Nasacort, lidocaine, epinephrine, and Zicam, the zinc-based intranasal agent, which had already been previously linked to causing anosmia. In mice treated with Zicam, the study revealed a high degree of cell damage in the deep tissue layers of the main olfactory epithelium (MOE), often causing irreversible damage. Damage was also found in other subepithelial structures critical to maintaining healthy sense of smell, including mucosal glands, capillary networks, and trigeminal nerve fibers. Ultimately, mice treated with Zicam showed disrupted sensitivity of olfactory sensory neurons used to detect odors. After two months, no return of function (sense of smell) was observed in the mice. The researchers also used harvested human nasal cell explants and treated them with Zicam. Compared to the explants treated with saline controls, the explants treated with Zicam showed much higher levels of lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme important to the process of glucose combustion in the body, and an important mechanism for cellular energy production. The higher levels of this enzyme suggested death of living cells (necrosis), which was confirmed under microscopic study of the tissue (histology). However, the FDA issued a warning letter to Matrixx Initiatives on June 16, 2009, and Matrixx voluntarily withdrew its Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Gel from the market. This study published by the researches at the University of Washington further support the FDA findings that Zicam causes nerve damage and anosmia.
